village well (EC)
the bucket full
of gossip

Editor’s Choices (EC) – Senryu

village well the bucket full of gossip Hifsa Ashraf, Pakistan There is a universality to Hifsa Ashraf’s poem. We all need water. So, we all need to consider a water supply. For many families, the convenience of piped water means they can access it simply by turning on a tap. For many others, life is not so convenient. In this piece, we are given the image of a village well. Although everyone is apparently there for the water, it is also a great meeting point (reminiscent of the water cooler in pre-COVID offices). I have been fortunate enough to see the community spirit around village wells in Asia. While I didn’t have a good handle on the language, it was clear there was plenty to talk about. Some conversations generated shouts and laughs, while others were conducted sotto voce. I’ve spoken to people who remember using a well in Europe. It seems to me that it wasn’t very long ago, in the grand scheme of things, when there were few alternatives to drawing water from your local well. For some, the role of the village well as a social hub is over, for others, that tradition continues.

drifting-sands-haibun, 2024

Going With the Flow

The river wind slows me down halfway through. I am trying not to resist whatever comes to my head; random thoughts, vivid memories, humming sounds, and musty smells. I want to clear my mind before I get back home, no matter how long it takes. I let my brown hair sway in the air and even stroke my face with its split ends. I am aware of my surroundings and myself as well. It’s a bit hard but relaxing to go beyond my comfort zone. But, it’s worth it to experience the “here and now,” grasp the moments that are unique and unusual in many ways.

failed haiku, 2024

self-healing

The yellow and brown leaves of chinar settle in on the windowsill like a jigsaw puzzle that needs to be solved. They are dead, useless, and soundless until the autumn breeze tickles them to fall on the ground, get mixed with soil, and nourish the tree they were once  part of. I am trying to solve the jigsaw puzzle of my life where certain regrets fall on the windowsill of my conscious mind, and I am waiting for the wind of understanding to tickle them, make them fall, so that they can mix with the soil of peace, and nourish my soul.

long summer drought
the jigsaw puzzle
of a farmer’s life

An extremely poignant take on the prompt. How the farmers live in the fear of Nature’s wrath. The cracks on the earth spell doom for them and the image of ‘the jigsaw puzzle’ sits so appropriately. It is hard to put the pieces of life together if one has to suffer a long drought. The poem stood out for the visual of the puzzle that is so close to the face of the earth in the case of a severe drought.

River Thames

I take a long walk around, as a stranger
who befriends its sight, sound, and depth

gusts of wind sway my chocolate brown hair,
which plays the melody unknown

what language does it really speak,
through the chaos of this ongoing fast pace

it boasts of the anchor of history

what else connects it, and us with souls
yet to arrive, or leave

“The Thinker” was found on a rocky beach on the Southeast Coast of Puerto Rico, near Maunabo, about 10 years ago. The area is rich in basalt with a natural patina from the constant surf. The stone could have several interpretations. It strongly evokes an image of Auguste Rodin’s celebrated statue in Paris. This stone is 8.9 cm wide, 17.8 cm high, and 8.1 cm deep, including the base, and is in the collection of Jorge Mendizabal. Photo by Hugo Lopez.
