Raining Rengay, 2026

late night dream

home alone
silence echoes
through each room

filtered light
on the jute rug

walnut chest
the lingering smell
of some old letters

mother’s call
pacing slowly
on the foggy trail

under the bridge
rustling leaves

silent prayer
drifting through the lake
a sacred lotus

Freshout Mag, 2025

Ancestral Home

ancient wind—

dandelion seeds drift

across the family field

unfolding tales

of love and loss

courtyard fountain—

ripples overlapping

a childhood lullaby

from the balcony

renaming stars

after loved ones

chorus of crickets

echoes through the veranda

lingering dream—

room by room by room

our shadows fade

Inspired by a 125 years old haveli in Chishtian, Punjab, Pakistan— owned by Bhadera Family.

 The Sacred Path

temple fountain
all the different metals
in dragonflies

red finches
swirl around the pagoda

small clouds
dispersed into morning
a forgotten dream

soft wind
unfolding apple blossoms
on the robe

ripples in the sky
becoming winter

om mantra
a monk by katsura river
facing the sun

John Hawkhead & Hifsa Ashraf

------

Reunion

nighttime ripples

on the pond

a fractured moon

the breeze plays

an unfinished symphony

crystals of light

enlarging

the space around us

moon shadow

a moth forgets

its margins

we drift

with silent violins

hazy window

overlapping

our silhouettes

David Watts & Hifsa Ashraf

Morning Star

early dawn

in the garden fountain

a sparkling star

        beady eyes

        in the holes

two squirrels share

the fresh nuts

        owls

        in a tangle

        covid moon

a big splash

in the birdbath

Tandem - A rengay journal, 2022

In the Park Wind

tautened robe

a child blows down

the statue’s leg

dust clouds

hide his face

lost sandals

in the fountain

her sunburnt feet

rippling

in the shallow water

small shadows

a beggar counts

what's left

gathering dusk

the distant coo

of pigeons

failed haiku, 2022

cusp of the years reshaping my shadow

A collaborative haiga with Zee Zahava

Failed Haiku, Volume 8, Issue# 85 (December 2022) - As a guest editor along with Arvinder Kaur

---------

A Blissful Day

meadow breeze

mom sings to me
her childhood song

making a bouquet
with fallen blossoms

hand in hand
following the trail
of a white butterfly

a passerby
plays a merry tune
with his flute

dancing along
the buzzing bees

dusk deepens
our shadows lengthen
above the tall grass

Hifsa Ashraf/Milan Rajkumar

------

vertigo spiral
blending my shadow
with delusions

all over screens
my projected ascent

Failed Haiku, Volume 7, Issue 80

------

A War Within

cigarette butts

in the ashtray

our last night's

arguments

all that’s left

war ravages

my dream home

smoldering

of your memories

before migration

the shooting star

lost into the smoke

Arvinder Kaur & Hifsa Ashraf

-------

Aftermath

chimney smoke

nostalgia

adding more logs

to the fireplace

the scent

long wait

at the window

silent stars

of burnt letters

immersion

the scribble of love

in her eyes

Arvinder Kaur & Hifsa Ashraf

failed haiku, Volume 7, Issue 79

-------

eggs on toast
another negative
maternity test

ground zero
resurfacing my desires

John Hawkhead & Hifsa Ashraf

coffee stains
on the table runner
family secrets

queueing for raindrops
at the foodbank

Hifsa Ashraf & John Hawkhead

------

lumps
in the rice pudding
first snow

summer heat
adding more mint chutney
in chickpea salad

lingering on
my daydreams
noon chai

family reunion—
the aroma of biryani
softens the arguments

Failed Haiku, A Journal of English Senryu
Volume 7, Issue 78

looping swallows

children enter the workbank

fully weaponized

crypto crash

the turbulence in a dark pool

~

stale bread

everything in the doctrine

crumbles away

cliff birds shifting

in the axis of the wind

John Hawkhead/Hifsa Ashraf

-----

Late Summer Rain

after the drizzle

adjusting kohl

in the rear-view mirror

screechy tires

glimpses from the past

monsoon hums

a dead heroine’s song

long drive

empty horizon

the shades

of this grief

billowing clouds

a pillion rider’s open hair

subway mirage

slipping into

anonymity

Arvinder Kaur & Hifsa Ashraf

Failed Haiku, Volume 7, Issue 77

-------

her thumbprints on the wedding contract   dried violet

dry crayon box her forgotten dreams

dusk deepening her dimples filled with tears

rouged cheeks of a teen girl   tangerine sky

her shadow on the aisle   trodden rose petals

rag doll in the dump her self-image

her nose pin a winter star in the sky

twilight murmuration overshadowing her freewill

Failed Haiku, Volume 7, Issue 76

--------

Rendezvous

rusty keyhole

stumbling
into a room of eyes
the guilty party

the low notes

whispers
twist and turn
clinking glasses

of a forgotten song

silence expands
to fill empty space
a ring between us

Hifsa Ashraf & John Hawkhead

------

Silent Sonata

lingering memory
the smell of old letters
from a drawer

lacy shadows
carve the room

white curtains
unleashing
love notes

echoes
of her words
silence with a bell

candlelight
flickers her eyes

chimes
in a hollow wind
a deep heart's cry

Hifsa Ashraf & David Watts

Failed Haiku, Volume 7, Issue 75

------

night at the border
the perseids interweave
this emptiness solitude walk
the fading glow
of Venus
back to my homeland
still orbiting around me
the ashes of war

Failed Haiku, Vol. 7, issue 74

-------

evening chill
a vagrant child gathers
the fallen twigs

winter fog
how long does
this grief last

frost moon
what if I break
my silence

Otoroshi Rengay Contest, 2021

Received Honourable Mentions for these two rengay

Night Echoes

moonlight —
nothing to choose between
water and blood

in mirror pieces
her kajal-lined eyes

wide open
blue
clouding over

pulling out
one more needle

from the voodoo doll

an empty chair
begins to rock

dead of night
on the doorway
webbed footprints

Alan Peat & Hifsa Ashraf

----------------

Blood Sacrifice

graveside manner
the shadow sorts body parts
for its creation

bones clicking
whispers of ghouls

a hiss of gas
twisting out
of the incision

chipped gravestone
the fork tongue licks
ancient words

sacred blade symbol
the sickle moon scar

eclipsed eyes
screen through ashes
the dead heart
