Rhythmic Sutra

Zen garden

the first light

casts my shadow

on the mossy stones

tingeing the pond

in a swirl gravel -

as the nun rakes it ,some slip

into the waters

golden koi

her shadow

trapped

in the ripples

-------

Monday

slow lunch

at a boiling point

the tenderness

of thick skin

my face reflects

an empty jar

of marshmallows

on the windowsill

a blunt knife

sharper now

my vision

of finger food

snow footprints;
my teenage nephew asks me,
“who is searching for whom?”

blue gardenia
overshadowing
my deepest pain

-----

tangerine sky
the lingering song
of a migratory bird
