The Pan Haiku Review, 2024

River Thames

I take a long walk around, as a stranger
who befriends its sight, sound, and depth

gusts of wind sway my chocolate brown hair,
which plays the melody unknown

what language does it really speak,
through the chaos of this ongoing fast pace

it boasts of the anchor of history

what else connects it, and us with souls
yet to arrive, or leave

“The Thinker” was found on a rocky beach on the Southeast Coast of Puerto Rico, near Maunabo, about 10 years ago. The area is rich in basalt with a natural patina from the constant surf. The stone could have several interpretations. It strongly evokes an image of Auguste Rodin’s celebrated statue in Paris. This stone is 8.9 cm wide, 17.8 cm high, and 8.1 cm deep, including the base, and is in the collection of Jorge Mendizabal. Photo by Hugo Lopez.
